What does inseam mean? A guide to jeans leg length in Australia
If you have ever bought jeans online and found the leg swimming around your ankle, you have met the inseam. It is the one number that decides whether jeans fit your legs, and most of us have never been told what it is.
Here is what it means, how to find yours, and what the numbers actually look like on an Australian body.
Inseam is the inside leg
Inseam is the distance from the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg, measured down the inside. Not the outside of the leg. Not your height. Just the inside seam, top to bottom.
Waist size tells you whether jeans will do up. Inseam tells you whether they will fit.
How to measure yours at home
You need a pair of jeans that already fit you well in the leg, and a tape measure.
Lay them flat. Find where the four seams meet at the crotch. Measure straight down the inside seam to the hem. That number is your inseam.
Use a pair you actually like the length of. If everything you own has been hemmed, measure a hemmed pair, because that is the length that works on you.
What counts as "standard", and why it depends who you are
There is no single standard, which is part of the confusion.
For men, regular means a 32 inch inseam, with short at around 30 and long at 34. For women it is messier: regular covers anything from 30 to 32 inches, petite sits around 26 to 28, and tall starts at 32.
So the same number means different things depending on which rack you are standing at.
The average Australian inseam, and why this matters
Nobody publishes a national inseam figure, so here is the honest version. The Australian Bureau of Statistics puts the average height at 175.6 cm for men and 161.8 cm for women. Inseam typically runs at about 45% of height.
That works out to roughly 31 inches for the average Australian man and roughly 28.5 inches for the average Australian woman.
Now compare that to what the shops call regular. Men's regular is 32 inches. Women's regular is 30 to 32.
The default length sold in this country is longer than the average Australian leg. About an inch longer for men. Up to three and a half inches longer for women.
Read that again, because it reframes the whole thing. If your jeans are always too long, you are not unusually short. You are somewhere near the middle of the population, buying a length that was set above it.
These are estimates, not laws. Two people the same height can have very different leg-to-torso proportions, which is exactly why you measure rather than guess.
Why hemming does not really fix it
This is the part nobody explains. Shortening a leg changes more than the length.
Jeans are cut with the knee in a particular place, the taper beginning at a particular point, and the pocket at a particular height. Take three inches off the bottom and the knee now sits above your knee, the taper starts in the wrong spot, and a straight leg starts reading as an odd bootcut. The length is right. The shape is not.
A tailor can shorten a leg. A tailor cannot move the knee.
Our lengths, and how to pick between them
DEVENI designs from a shorter build up instead of cutting a standard pattern down. The knee sits where your knee is. The taper starts where it should. Nothing needs altering when it arrives.
Shorter Fit. Women's skinny in a 27 inch inseam and wide leg in 29 inch. Men's skinny and slim fit in 27 inch. Built for anyone whose leg length sits below the Australian average, which is most people who have ever paid to have jeans taken up.
Regular/Tall. Women's skinny in 30 inch and wide leg in 32 inch. Men's skinny and slim fit in 30 inch. For longer legs, in the same cuts.
The point was never that everybody needs a short jean. It was that the length should match the leg. Sometimes that is a 27. Sometimes it is a 32.
